Siniora: UN should interrogate Syrians outside Lebanon

In a direct rebuffal to the US and Mehlis, Lebanese PM Fouad Siniora says the UN should question the Syrians outside Lebanon.

Mehlis is insisting that the interviews take place in Beirut. Syria has offered to host the interviews in any UN building in Syria, or in any third country. But still Mehlis insists on Beirut - despite the risk to the witnesses.

Now Siniora says the interviews should take place outside Lebanon: "The investigation is more important than its location. I prefer them to be interrogated outside Lebanon. Our main concern is the truth."

So who is Lebanon's new power broker? Siniora? Or Mehlis? The outcome of this little dispute could determine whether Siniora really is the head of Lebanon's first 'free' government, or whether he's yet another western puppet.

What siniora asked for today is a direct result of Asad,s strong stand during last week speach ,The only languege they understand is confrontation.

Sasa,

1595 and 1636 are UN resolutions. Seniora can give his opinion, full stop.

What would you say should it be the other way around?

Yes, under international law it IS the other way round. Siniora is the democratically elected leader of a sovereign country.

The UN Charter respects sovereignty. So, yes, if Siniora doesn't want Mehlis to interview, or put on trial, or visit somewhere in his country, he can say no. Regardless of any UN Resolution.

Have a look at the UN Investigation into the Jenin massacre - the investigators were denied entry into Israel...they cited grounds of sovereignty.

Sasa ,you realy have faith in the UN and siniora. As you well know Mehles job is to find Syria guilty or not cooperative so sanction will follow.

Well I guess if the UN softens its stance on the location and one of the reasons is -as Mehlis put it today- Seniora's stand on the issue, all those who accused him of being a puppet will see how wrong they were?

Right norman ?

But I guess not ... they'll just invent a new conspiracy explanation ... come on I am waiting for yours.

The uncompromising strong stand of Syria was behind the retreat of Siniora and Mehles, don,t you see that if Sinira and Mehles wanted cooperation they would have suggested that before Basha,s speach.

Norman, the uncompromizing of Syria may be the reason and may not be the reason. (I personnaly think seniora wouldn't have wanted the questionning to be in lebanon anywasy) but that is completely besides my point.

My point is right after the speech mehlis was still insisting on the location while seniora wanted something else then mehlis softened so no matter what the reason is Seniora was not acting as a slave or a pawn.

Do you at least see that ?

I come to wonder what happens to Syrians when they hear Bashar Al Assad speaking....

Do they forget who this man really is? Who on this board actually voted for Assad?

All Syrians did and many Lebanese ,i mean the Arab ones.
