Terror attack at Syrian border
A terrorist has been killed at the Syrian-Lebanese border.
Officials say 28 year old Omar Abdullah, a member of Tawhid and Jihad, blew himself up at the Jdeidet Yabous crossing.
He was being questioned after suspicions over his identity papers. He shot the border guards, ran away and then blew himself up when cornered, injuring two border staff.
It backs up claims from Lebanon about terrorists and weapons flowing across the Syrian border. And will raise suspicions about the number of Al Qaeda operatives inside Lebanon. Recent research has shown that the small country is one of the Arab World's Al Qaeda hotspots, because of Lebanon's weak government.
Tawhid and Jihad is the name of former Al Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab Al Zarqawi's group. They have staged a number of brasen attacks in Syria - including an attempted attack on the US Embassy in Damascus.
I doubt that the US will change course in regard to Syria:
Gates at odds with Bush over Iran, Syria

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush's nominee to be the next defense secretary, Robert Gates, disagrees with the president and wants dialogue with Syria and Iran.
In 65 pages of written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee before his confirmation hearings begin next week, Gates sided with Bush by saying a rapid withdrawal from Iraq "would have dangerous consequences both in the region and globally for many years to come," the Washington Post reported.
However, Gates, who was a member of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, said the Bush administration's refusal to talk with Iraq's neighbors -- Iran and Syria -- was counterproductive.
"Even in the worst days of the cold war the U.S. maintained a dialogue with the Soviet Union and China and I believe those channels of communication helped us manage many potentially difficult situations," Gates wrote.
In response to a question about outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's performance in the past six years, Gates was diplomatic, the report said.
