UN investigator: no Syrian suspects

Detlev Mehlis, the UN's chief investigator into the murder of Rafiq Al-Hariri says there are no Syrian suspects. It comes after he harshly criticised Syria for failing to turn over documents vital to the invesigation. He also said Syria didn't respond to requests for interviews.

But now Syria has officially invited Mehlis to Damascus - he is said to be keen to make the trip.

Meanwhile, the four Lebanese suspects in Beirut have been officially arrested. They will be sent to court soon, where the charges against them will be laid out. The four men were the most powerful people in Lebanon for the past 15 years.

This is all a game to benefit the US and Israel. They say themselves: Syria had nothing to do with it, but Syria nevertheless had to suffer through international pressure. And what of the Israeli occupation? Nothing is said.

p.s. I left you something in your mailbox.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I would absolutely love it if those 15 people's killers were put to justice, but why are you jumping on the train to blame Syria? Did you read the post: "there are no Syrian suspects"? This is not the way to avenge murder. Who benefits from these killings, of the Syrian withdrawal, of all this turmoil and crisis? I assure you it is not Syria.

I assure you it is not Syria.

For you assurance to have any value, you are Mr......?

Mr. Common Sense

Then sign up for the list of lawyers.

It does not matter if anybody in syria is envolved or not they will blame Syria and cause an embaressment to Syria when they ask to surrender Syrian offecial to the international court ,That will be a chalenge to president Asad,I hope he knows what to do because that might atrap to implicate the Syrian Goverment not just indiveduals,i think syria should not surrender anybody to the international court bu stress to prosecut in syria as does the US and Israel, naim

UN probe turns up fingerprints of high-ranking Syrian officers in two luxury flats in Beirut found to be clandestine headquarters of Hariri’s assassins

September 5, 2005, 9:53 PM (GMT+02:00)

Another corner of the veil concealing the elaborate assassination conspiracy against Lebanese former prime minister Rafiq Hariri is lifted here by DEBKAfile’s exclusive counter-terror sources.

A key discovery by the UN inquiry team led by the German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis is a secret headquarters the plotters set up in two luxury apartments in the upscale Beirut suburb of Hamra. One was used by the assassins as living quarters, the second housed advanced electronic jamming gear whose employment ensured the successful execution of the crime.

Hariri and 20 others were killed in a huge explosion that blew up his heavily secured convoy on February 14, 2005.

The conspirators had taken into account the fact that Hariri’s large, heavily protected convoys were equipped with the latest thing in electronic hardware made in America for detecting and defusing explosives, locating suicide bombers or other armed men in the path of the convoy and jamming their firing mechanisms. His equipment also picked up electronic signals emitted from the immediate vicinity of the convoy and listened to telephone calls, including from mobiles in the neighborhood, while blocking listening devices homing in on phone or communications devices operating from the convoy.

An expert who talked to DEBKAfile’s sources after examining the equipment compared it to the devices fitted in US presidential convoys.

But the gear Hariri’s assassins had installed in the al Hamra apartment was obviously customized to breach Hariri’s electronic safeguards. This was deduced by the electronic experts the UN investigator requested from Washington and Paris along with fingerprint analysts to go through the two apartments.

According to our sources, the fingerprints found in the flats clinched the case and enabled the Lebanese prosecutor general to publish his indictment last Thursday, Sept. 1, for complicity in the Hariri murder and a terrorist attack against four pro-Syrian Lebanese officers, former chief of public security Jamil al-Sayyed, the former head of internal security Ali al-Hajj, the ex-direct of military intelligence Raymond Azar and the commander of Emil Lahoud’s presidential guard Mustafa Hamdan.

The investigators also turned up fingerprints identified as belonging to Syrian generals and linking them directly to the assassination. Mehlis will confront Syrian president Bashar Assad with this evidence when he goes to Damascus in the coming

Just incase you missed that - that was from DEBKAfile - Israel's counter-terrorism news source.

Debka is far more reliable than the government controlled media in MOST (if not all Arab countries) ....

Free Press allows for conflicting views, and opinions of all kinds.

But as usual, Syrian dogs will blame ANYONE for their transgressions and criminal behavior -- AND THE SYRIAN PEOPLE SUPPORT THIS BEHAVIOR. Thats my main issue....Baby Assad, and King Lion have sold their people down the river, and the Syrians GLADLY and WILLINGLY follow the current....

'Free Press' also allows for anonymous sources ;)
