Syria requests British extremist's extradition

Syria has requested the extradition of Omar Bakri - the former leader of British-based extremist group Al-Muhajiroon, a group allied with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Britain was considering treason charges against him so he fled to Lebanon this week. He was arrested in Beirut but released, and now Syria has formally requested his extradition to face charges in Damascus.

Lebanon says that because he holds Lebanese nationality he can not be extradited. He is Syrian born, but lived in Jordan. He fled from Jordan more than 20 years ago and was granted political asylum in Britain. Since then he has been banned from many British mosques. He continued to preach his radical violent agenda outside mosque doors often receiving angry reactions from Muslims.
